Media Player is written in C#, this is one of Microsoft's DotNet languages and requires the DotNet Framework:

requirements for the DotNet Famework are:
Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT*, Windows XP

*Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 requires Service Pack 6a.

You must also be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later

pretty much runs on any version of windows with the Visual Basic 6 runtime installed (allows Visual Basic 6 programs to run)

Relies heavily on DirectShow, if your audio/video codecs or DirectShow installation is mashed... you won't have much joy.
